Install Oxygen Sensor

Install Oxygen Sensor is primarily advisable if you have headers. Headers tend to cool the exhaust gasses down, which in turn can affect Oxygen Sensor performance. To combat this, a self-heated sensor can be installed, to ensure proper operation regardless of exhaust temp, and also provide shorter times to closed loop operation. We will spare you the details on actually installing the sensor, since it doesn't take a brain surgeon, just a 7/8" wrench, sensor socket, or crows foot and some of your time. The reason for this article is to explain how to properly wire it up. First, you will need the parts. We prefer to use AC Delco parts. The quality is unsurpassed. Also to ensure proper installation, and easy replacement in the future, it is recommended that you purchase the Install Oxygen Sensor, so that the sensor can easily be plugged and unplugged as needed.

Install Oxygen Sensor

Oxygen sensors("O2 Sensors") are used in all cars made for the United States. They are used in cars made for many other countries as well. When you Install Oxygen Sensor in your car goes bad, your car runs differently. This is a story of our experiences with the oxygen sensor in the car. Your mileage may vary. Gasoline engines run best when the air-fuel mixture is correct. The air-fuel mixture must be controlled to reduce exhaust pollutant emissions. Lowest emissions are achieved with a slightly lean mixture. The catalytic converter, an essential part for emission control, also likes a controlled lean air-fuel mixture. The Install Oxygen Sensor detects the air-fuel mixture of a gasoline engine by measuring the amount of oxygen in the exhaust gas.

Install Oxygen Sensor

The fuel-injection system will trim the mixture richer or leaner based on the signal from the Install Oxygen Sensor. The typical installation is in the exhaust manifold, where the hot exhaust gases will pass by it. High temperature (>350 C) is required for the sensor to operate. Car has a heated sensor, so the sensor starts to work very quickly after the engine has started. It has three wires. Two are for the heater, and one is the sensor output. The metal case of the sensor is grounded and is the return for the sensor's output. Unheated sensors have one or two wires. The Install Oxygen Sensor is positioned in the exhaust pipe and can detect rich and lean mixtures. The mechanism in most sensors involves a chemical reaction that generates a voltage (see the patents below for details). The engine's computer looks at the voltage to determine if the mixture is rich or lean, and adjusts the amount of fuel entering the engine accordingly.
